"buying" the happiness

"that's the one" his 17 years old son pointed at the Yamaha Electric Guitar in the mall.

"you sure, you want that thing, that's more expensive than our lifestyle" Dad remarked.

"But Dad, I don't wanna learn music on a cheaper one" His son demanded.

"Okay we will work on it some other time" The single parent said.

"Can't you work on buying me some happiness ever?" the motherless son complained for their poverty.

Three weeks later on his birthday, his son woke up to see the same guitar in his bed room.

His son loved the surprise, "thanks dad, you did work on it"

"Yes, Indeed" he replied.

Only it cost him his own kidney.

  1. Oh I'm not sure I fancy paternal love going to those lengths, Amrit. After all, teaching a child that they can't always get what they want is a good lesson too, don't you think?

    1. Yes, nobody should fancy it, but the truth is, there are some parents who go to extreme levels [certainly not like this]. the main point behind this fiction is that you can't buy happiness, you have to pursue it, this is what the "Pursuit of Happyness" taught us...

  2. Ouch! And I mean that literally and figuratively! Why not explain to the son that he can work on getting the guitar instead? But, as a fictional piece, the last line was a good shocker!

    1. this is a fictional piece only to put light on the kind of parents that spoil their kids by going out of their ways, they certainly don't come up to this length but I had to emphasize it to explain my point :)

    1. Yes Indeed, it was written to put light on those foolish parents :)

  5. The little boy is innocent and has still to learn the ways of the world but the father has not done the right thing to part an important part of the body for a material thing.

    1. Parentsspoil their kids by going out of their ways to fulfill theiir needs, these parents certainly don't come up to this length but I had to emphasize the sacrificing level to explain my point :)

  6. That wasn't a wise thing to do. Yes we love our kids and always want to see them happy but kids need to learn and have boundaries too. Thank goodness this is fiction.

    1. Yes Suzy, this is a fiction but I wanted to put the spotlight on the kind of parents that spoil their kids by going out of their ways, I had to emphasize the sacrifice to explain my point :)

  7. My God that's too much to pay for fulfilling your child's wishes! I hope the kid understands the value of his father's love rather than demanding what's above their lifestyle!

    1. Indeed, all I wanted to convey is that love your children, don't worship them.. happiness can never be bought..

  8. It's hard to make sacrifices for others when they largely go unnoticed, isn't it?

    1. Yes Indeed, foolish parents does these sacrifices, instead making them learn is important, I know I emphasized the sacrifice somehow, but there are parents like this :(

  9. Such parents do exist, and they dont often realise that they're spoiling the kids. I guess that's the message you wish to convey to both parents and kids alike. A very contemporary perspective !

    1. Yes, I am not saying this is an inspirational tale, instead this is an eye opener.

  10. Oh my God! Not worth it at all! I wonder how the son will feel when he comes to know. So very sad to see some parents sell a body part to avoid disappointing their children!

    1. Yes, that's the point.. the son will hate himself for that, parents should learn to make their kids understand their financial hitches instead of loving them blindly like a fool

  11. That's a sad sad tale at so many levels, Amritt. :( But then we do have parents that go at length to give in to their kids' demands without understanding that when the kids will grow up they will not value such gestures at all. Sad!

    1. Yes, there are parents who think that happiness can be bought with such stupidities... instead they should work on learning some wisdom and passing it to their offspring

  12. Very touching story. If seen from a single parent's perspective, it was a great sacrifice. Hats off to him.

  14. I wonder to what end some parents will go to fulfill their kids happiness. I feel a parent must explain to the child about the financial condition and make them understand. Having said that, I respect the father.

    1. but its not worth it, because the son will never appreciate it... talking is important... thanks for your point Vishal

  15. Ohhh my !!!! that's extreme. I feel.so bad for the father. The son needs to be kept in check.

    1. Yes actually, every father was once a son and every son will become a father one day... they need to learn this :)

  16. That's gruesome AMritt. I am aghast at the way children demand things from their parents...by the way, kidney would be expensive and he sold it merely for a musical instrument when he could get huge money..lolz :P

  17. Very sad. I am not one bit happy with the end. And I think at times kids do demand a lot more than what is needed :|

  18. The parents can't give in to their children's unreasonable demands like this one. As a fictional piece it is fine but the parent in me cringes at the thought of the father selling his kidney for his son's guitar.

    1. At times, single parents stress too much to fulfill their kid's needs... they think that the kid is already struck with the loss of one parent.. but this is no good way of upbringing... thanks for stopping by :)

  19. I hope I don't ever come across such a parent. I am one who believes that children should be made aware early in life itself that life is not a bed of roses and that they cannot have all that they wish. They must learn certain things the hard way. It not only teaches them to value things, money and relationships but also prepares them to face the ups and downs of life with courage.
